Group Music Therapy for Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder

Music is a universal language, understood by all, regardless of ability, making it an excellent therapeutic tool for working with children on the autism spectrum. Research shows that most autistic individuals demonstrate positive responses to music. It enables those without language to communicate, participate, and express themselves non-verbally and promotes relatedness, relaxation, and learning through concrete, multi-sensory stimulation. At the same time, musical elements and structures provide a sense of security and familiarity. Since music is processed in both hemispheres of the brain, music can stimulate functioning and may assist autistic children in the development of their verbal communication, speech and language skills. In addition, music is highly engaging and can motivate children to reduce negative and/or self-stimulatory responses, as well as icrease participation in more appropriate and socially acceptable ways.

Families who are interested in Music Therapy programs at NCMC should call to request further information and make a reservation for one of our family orientation sessions and a private assessment. Scholarships and subsidies may be available for qualifying families. Be sure to ask about these opportunities at your orientation.

Private Music Therapy

Music therapy provides a vital means of expression for individuals with various developmental and/or physical challenges. One-on-one private music therapy provides an opportunity for more in-depth work to address individual goals and hone one's own creative voice.
