Through a grant from the F.A.O. Schwarz Family Foundation, The Northampton Community Music Center has piloted a program that brings its students, teachers, and community volunteers to the Northampton Rehabilitation & Nursing Center in Northampton, MA three times per week to make music with the residents of its Alzheimer's Unit. Compelling research suggests that incorporating music into the regular regimen of care for patients with Alzheimer's disease can combat the negative effects of "sundowning" and in some cases slow the development of the patient's dementia. Recent studies even suggest that music might promote the creation and growth of new brain cells. It has been a rewarding experience for all involved. We encourage you to download the following PDF files and read about our pilot project's history, structure, and observations. Perhaps you can even start a similar project in your community.
